When you first start RVing, you’ll educate yourself on many fun and exciting products like solar panels, entertainment systems, and outdoor awnings.
Some products you’ll purchase aren’t quite as exciting, but they’re equally important (if not more so)! Like an RV toilet paper alternative, for example.
While no one likes to flush their money down the toilet, investing in the appropriate RV toilet paper can save you money down the road.
Let’s get into some great RV toilet paper alternatives!
What Makes RV Toilet Paper Special?
RV toilet paper is thinner and loosely composed, which significantly accelerates the dissolving process.
Once this TP makes contact with liquid, it will begin to break down. This instant process helps minimize the potential for clogs in your RV’s plumbing system.
Is RV Toilet Paper Actually Necessary?
Marketing teams trying to sell RV toilet paper tell us that RV toilet paper breaks down rapidly to prevent potential clogs or build-ups in your RV’s black tanks.
Regular toilet paper doesn’t break down fast enough though, and the resulting clogs can, at the least, require professional assistance.
At the worst, you might have to poke around through your black tank valve into your holding tank to break up the clogs. Yuck!
Many RVers shy away from the initial price, which can be at a premium for soft, quality products.
Additionally, it’s not always easy to find rapid dissolving RV toilet paper, so you might have to go out of your way to find a Camping World or other RV store to get it.
The price of RV toilet paper is ultimately better than a clogged RV black water tank from non RV toilet paper that could cost you hundreds to repair!
RV toilet paper will probably save money in the long run but, are there any other options?
Can You Use Regular Toilet Paper in an RV?
Typically, you don’t want to use just any old residential toilet paper in your RV.
You might long for the plush comfort of specific residential brand toilet papers, but you can’t use them in your RV if you want to avoid messy clogs and black tank trouble!
However, septic-safe toilet paper is the exception. Many residential homes use toilet paper labeled as septic-safe if they have a septic tank sewer system.
This specific toilet paper type, much like RV toilet paper, breaks down at an increased rate.
While RV black holding tanks are utterly different from a residential septic system, septic-safe toilet paper will generally be safe for RV use.
You’ll want to verify with the packaging that it’s genuinely septic safe, but also test to make sure it is.
We’ll share how you can test your toilet paper a little later in this article.
Can You Use Septic-Safe Toilet Paper in Your RV?
Yes, but bathroom users should still be mindful of their paper usage. Flushing a large amount of toilet paper, whether septic safe or not, is a recipe for a potential issue. If your favorite brand is labeled as “septic safe,” then the odds are favorable that you’ll have limited problems in an RV.
There’s a relatively easy test to determine toilet paper’s safeness for an RV’s black tank. Read on to learn more.
Alternatives to RV Toilet Paper: What to Look For
While RV specific toilet paper is ideal, you can sometimes use the toilet paper from your sticks and bricks home but research any modifications first.
As mentioned previously, you just need to choose a septic-safe option.
Look for the “septic safe” stamp of approval on the packaging. You might be surprised how many toilet tissue these days are septic tank safe!
The drawback to using septic-safe toilet paper is that you might have to use more fresh water to flush it.
If you have plenty of water to spare, it’s generally safe to flush this type of paper.
Try the “Dissolve Test” With Regular Toilet Paper First
If you want to use regular toilet paper, you can there’s a test to see if your current brand will work—many RVers use the “dissolve test” before flushing any new toilet paper.
To do the test, fill a lidded glass jar with water, then add a few squares of paper.
Seal the container tightly and shake it a few times. If the regular bath tissue easily dissolves, it should be safe.
You want the toilet paper to break down quickly, so it doesn’t cause damaging clogs.
If your toilet paper fails this test, but you still want to use a particular type of toilet paper, you have one more option: throwing it in a trash can after use. If you don’t put any toilet paper into the black tank, you can use any type of toilet paper!
You can put this practice into place by using a small trash can or waste basket in your bathroom, specifically for used toilet paper, and change the plastic bag often. While it might seem out of the ordinary for us, throwing toilet paper into the trash is common in many places.
It’s a simple alternative if your RV’s holding tank clogs often and you’re sick of having to use the campground bathroom.
