If you’ve not heard of the Prius Camper, you should learn about this battery-powered RV anomaly. You may have seen and experienced the Toyota Prius, but the Japanese company Camp Inn took the Prius to the next level.

There are many jokes about the size and power (or lack thereof) of the Prius, but the Prius Camper is no joke. With a more powerful battery and a reinforced rear axle, you might want to learn more about it before counting it out of your plans. Let’s check it out!

What Is a Prius Camper?

A Prius Camper may be unusual, but it’s appealing, too. The camper comfortably sleeps four. It’s pretty amazing what designers can do with such a small space.

The vehicle’s look may not be the most attractive aesthetically, but it’s pretty functional. The Japanese conversion looks like something out of a futuristic video game. The camper is 20 inches longer than a standard and stands 80 inches high, so it’s a little bigger than your run-of-the-mill compact car.

Where Is the Prius Camper Made?

If you want to find where the Prius Camper is manufactured, and you’re in North America, you’re going to have to travel pretty far. Nagano, Japan, is the founding spot of the Prius Camper, or “Relax Cabin.” The vehicle was a long-time showcase piece for enthusiasts at the Japanese Auto Salon in Tokyo.

About Camp Inn

Camp Inn, a Japanese conversion company, makes the Prius Camper. The company typically specializes in converting small vans but created something unique and more fuel-efficient with the Prius.

The Prius, being the top-selling car in Japan and a hybrid, made sense as the top candidate for renovation. Camp Inn successfully transformed the Prius into the first-ever hybrid camper. It may not look attractive, but Camp Inn worked a minor miracle with the new layout.

What Features Does the Prius Camper Have?

You may be surprised at just how much the Prius Camper offers. When you experience a Prius with plenty of standing room and a sleeping room for four, you might rethink your idea of a hybrid compact car.

Sleeping Space

Camp Inn designed the Relax Cabin to have plenty of room for at least four people to sleep comfortably. You could probably even fit five people in the sleep quarters of the Prius Camper, but that’s up to you. The back seats of the vehicle lie down flat to form the first double bed, and the extension on the top of the Prius serves as the second two-person sleeping area.

Appliances

Appliances in a Toyota Prius are enough to turn heads. The camper comes with a microwave and a small fridge, so you can cook and store food as you explore new horizons.

Large Entry Door

You might expect to crawl around a Prius Camper due to the limited space, but the design of the Relax Camper is such that you can maneuver your body with ease. There’s a full-sized door at the back of the vehicle for people to walk into the space.

Plenty of Windows

You won’t be short of enriching lighting in the camper, either. The standard vehicle windows of the Prius do a lot to light up the space. The sleek, white design of the interior helps brighten the experience. You won’t be short on illumination in the back of this space-age-looking hybrid camper.

However, No Bathroom

The biggest downfall to the Prius Camper is that there’s no bathroom inside. However, no bathroom doesn’t mean the whole project is a wash. The great outdoors provides ample bathroom space when you’re camping.

Can You Still Buy a Prius Camper?

This is a tricky question to answer. You might be able to find one on the internet somewhere, but it’s not going to be easy. They’re not easy to find because they were only ever sold in Japan.

You may have to pay a pretty penny to get one if you live in the United States. If you’re in Japan, however, it’s much more likely that you could find a Prius Camper of your own.

Prius Camper Proves to Be Cooler Than It Sounds

The Prius Camper has much more than you may have thought it would. It won’t be a beastly off-road performer, but it is more remarkable than it sounds. Who would have thought you could sleep four, cook dinner, and wash the dishes in a compact hybrid car?

You may not be able to purchase your own Relax Cabin easily, but nothing is stopping you from using the Prius Camper as inspiration for your design. Now get to that drawing board, and show the world what you can do!
