Sandwiched between Memorial Day and the 4th of July is a patriotic celebration that often gets overlooked.

While many RVers fly American flags over their RVs in campgrounds, few know anything about Flag Day in the USA.

The Stars and Stripes symbolize freedom, unity, and democracy. It represents the sacrifices and triumphs of the American people throughout history. So what’s the deal with Flag Day, and how can you observe it while RVing?

Today, we will look at this important occasion. Let’s get started!

What Is Flag Day?

Flag Day is a holiday in the USA commemorating the adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777. The origins of the patriotic occasion are somewhat unclear. Some claims date back to 1861, but the most widely accepted origin was that it was first celebrated in New York in 1889.

The claim is that Professor George Bolch held patriotic ceremonies in his school to honor one of the most recognized symbols in the world.

The State Department of Education liked the idea and took steps toward encouraging all public schools to do the same.

While President Wilson and President Coolidge issued proclamations to create the holiday in 1916 and 1927, it didn’t receive the honor until 1949. Congress approved the plan, and President Harry Truman proudly signed it into law.

Why Is Flag Day Celebrated in the USA?

Flag Day gets celebrated in various ways across the United States. No matter how people celebrate, it’s typically to show respect for the flag and its symbolism. Observances honor the lives of the brave men and women who have fought and died defending it.

In addition, this is the perfect opportunity for communities and groups to come together and reflect on their shared values and identity. They can focus on all the flag represents and reaffirm commitments to those ideas in their community.

This is an excellent opportunity to hold parades and festivities to educate children about the history and symbolism of the American flag. Doing so instills a greater national pride and patriotism in future generations.

Is Flag Day a National Holiday in the USA?

This special occasion is a national holiday but not a federal holiday. You’ll frequently see patriotic displays, parades, and other special events celebrating it. You may even find large celebrations in some communities.

However, because it is not a federal holiday, mail and other federal services continue to operate, and most Americans don’t get a day off from work.

How to Observe Flag Day in Your RV

It is easy to observe Flag Day in the USA, no matter your situation. We have a few ideas if you want to celebrate Flag Day in your RV. Let’s explore!

Fly the American Flag

One of the easiest ways to celebrate Flag Day is to fly the American Flag. As we’ll show you later, you have several options for camping under Old Glory. It doesn’t take much effort to bring the Red, White, and Blue with you.

With so much divisiveness these days, this can be a way to remind everyone in the campground that we are the “United” States of America. This is a quick and easy way to celebrate this patriotic camping occasion.

Have a Cookout

What’s a celebration without food? You can take further steps toward uniting the campground or RV park by hosting a cookout and inviting those camping around you.

Fire up the grill, toss some burgers or hot dogs onto it, and get to know your fellow Americans around you. This can be an incredible opportunity to get to know people you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Learn About Flag Etiquette

Many Americans don’t realize that there are guidelines that dictate how they should display, handle, and respect the American flag. These etiquette rules show reverence for one of the most powerful symbols in our country.

Flag Day is the perfect opportunity to teach others about displaying the flag. This includes only displaying it from sunrise to sunset unless illuminated at night. Additionally, the flag’s placement in an array of flags should always be at the center and raised higher than any other flag.

You can teach others about the proper handling of it as well. Let them know that it should never touch the ground and how to fold it properly when not in use. There are also procedures for disposing of a flag once it becomes worn or tattered.

If you’re RVing with little ones, this is a chance to teach them the Pledge of Allegiance.

You can practice reciting it and demonstrating how to stand facing the flag with your right hand over your heart. It’s never too early for kids to learn more about their nation.

We’ve seen people sitting on them and drying out their sewer hoses or attachments. A table cover is a must-have item if you plan to use the picnic table.

If you need a table cover anyway, why not use one with stars and stripes?  It is a set of two 54-by72-inch plastic table covers.

The plastic is thick enough to use multiple times, especially if you’re careful with them. Its 2,100 reviews and 4.6-star rating prove you shouldn’t overlook these quality options.
