The tires on your RV play an essential role in you and your RV traveling safely. Despite being 94 million miles away from Earth, the Sun is powerful enough to do some serious damage to your tires.

If you want to give your tires the best chance at a long life, invest in a quality set of RV tire covers.

However, you don’t see nearly as many RVers using them as you might think. So are RV tire covers worth it?

Today, we’ll look and see if they are worth buying. Let’s dive in!

What Are RV Tire Covers?

RV tire covers protect your tires from the sun and other extreme weather conditions.

Extended amounts of sun exposure can cause sidewall cracks, which result in slow leaks or possibly even a major tire failure.

Covers can help you extend the life of your tires and help you avoid having to replace them prematurely.

Pros of RV Tire Covers

RV tire covers protect your RV tires when sitting for extended periods.

The rubber dries out from the sun, and moisture from rain and snow can get onto the sensitive components of your wheels and rims.

This can cause these parts to become dirty or rust.

Additionally, some RVers love that they can hide dirty tires. Many people take their rigs on off-road adventures or boondocking, resulting in dirt and grime caking their vehicle.

Those concerned about how their RV and campsite look enjoy that RV tire covers will hide messy tires.

RV tire covers can pay for themselves. If they help you extend the life of your tires and avoid replacing them prematurely, it’ll save you money.

Avoiding a single tire blowout is enough savings to pay for most sets of tire covers.

How Do You Measure Tire Covers for RV?

You wouldn’t go shopping and buy a shirt that’s too big or too small, and RV tire covers are no different.

Just like Goldilocks, you want one that’s just right. You need to know the size of your tires.

You can use a tape measure to see how many inches it is from one tread to the other.

You’ll also want to quickly measure the width of your tire and ensure the cover you purchase is compatible with your tire’s dimensions.

What Material Is Best for Tire Covers?

When it comes to tire covers, you typically get what you pay for.

Don’t expect to get a luxury product when you’re paying a budget-friendly price.

Inexpensive tire covers may last a season or two, but that’s about it.

Spend a bit more money on covers made from polyester or vinyl. These materials withstand more elements and last longer.

If you have more money to spend, a set of hard-plastic covers will offer the best protection.

Keep in Mind: Before spending the money on your RV tires, make sure you know what you’re getting. Take a look at our RV Tires Buyers Guide!

What Is the Best Color for RV Tire Covers?

You can find RV tire covers in just about every color, but is one better than the rest?

You’ll most commonly see white and black ones.

Typically black tire covers look the best and can have a long life, especially when treated with UV protection.

However, white is often best if your RV will sit for months in any southwestern state.

A lighter color will help avoid attracting unnecessary heat to your tires which can also cause damage.

It will however draw the eyes to your covers more which can detract esthetically from your RV.

Should You Cover RV Tires in Winter?

If you plan to move your RV every week or two, it may not be as necessary to cover your tires throughout the winter.

However, it doesn’t hurt to cover your tires when in doubt.

You should cover the tires whenever your RV sits for weeks or months.

This helps avoid unnecessary sun exposure and harsh elements, including snow and cold.

Are RV Tire Covers Worth It?

If your RV will spend a significant amount of time in storage or exposed to the elements, RV tire covers are worth it.

Driving with tires damaged by the elements causes dangerous situations.

Furthermore, the environment you live in can make a big difference. Extreme heat, cold, or rain can damage your tires, axles, and more.

Additionally, replacing your tires or fixing damages from a tire blowout can become a huge expense. It only takes one major tire issue before you’ll do about anything to get as much life out of your tires as possible.
