When it’s time to get away for the winter, many RVers head to sunny Florida, Arizona, or southern California. But another popular snowbird destination is near the Mexican border in southeastern Texas. Alamo Palms RV Resort is an excellent option for RVers who want to have everything they need for a comfortable winter vacation. Whether you enjoy playing tennis, RC car racing, savoring authentic Mexican cuisine, or hitting the beach, Alamo Palms is in an ideal location. Let’s learn more about this Encore park!
Where is Alamo Palms RV Resort?
Alamo Palms RV Resort is in Alamo, Texas. With over 600 campsites, it’s one of the largest Encore parks in the U.S. Since everything is bigger in Texas, this makes sense. This Rio Grande Valley RV resort is just off Interstate 2 in the southernmost part of the Lonestar State. It’s about an hour from the Gulf Coast and just 15 miles north of the Mexican border. While it’s called “Alamo Palms,” it’s nowhere near the famous attraction in San Antonio.
Pro Tip: If you have plans to travel to Texas this summer, be sure to check out the Blue Lagoon to help you beat the summer heat!
Who Can Stay At Alamo Palms RV Resort?
As we mentioned, Alamo Palms is an Encore RV Resort, which is part of the Trails Collection that owners can add to their Thousand Trails membership. We’ve shared for years about our experiences with Thousand Trails, the different membership levels, and the various campgrounds around the U.S. The Trails Collection add-on allows members to stay up to two weeks at a time at select Encore parks.

However, you don’t have to be a Thousand Trails member to have access to Alamo Palms RV Resort. You can book a retail site and stay for as long as you like. Members have the advantage of reserving campsites without paying a nightly fee. But anyone is permitted to stay here with a retail reservation.
Actually, “anyone” can’t stay at Alamo Palms RV Resort. This park is an age-qualified resort, which means you have to be 55 or older. Families and younger travelers won’t be able to make a reservation.
What Amenities Are At Alamo Palms RV Resort?
If the tropical setting and easy access to Old Mexico and the South Padre Island beaches aren’t enough to lure you to this part of Texas, the amenities at Alamo Palms might secure the deal. They include professional tennis courts, a heated swimming pool, a dog park, shuffleboard courts, and an exercise room. RVers can also access the business center, laundry, library, and game room.
The Pros of Alamo Palms RV Resort
If you’re over age 55, you’ll enjoy your stay at Alamo Palms because of the activities, overall maintenance, and staff. It’s one of the best campgrounds in this part of Texas. Plus, you’re only a short drive away from shopping, dining, and attractions. Everything you need for an enjoyable winter is right here.
Lots of Activities
Not only are there plenty of amenities at Alamo Palms RV Resort, but the staff also plans activities for the guests. They hold potluck dinners, bingo nights, and ballroom dances and host live music events. You can also enjoy playing horseshoes, going for a swim, soaking in the hot tub, or relaxing in the library.

RC Race Car Track
One unique feature of Alamo Palms RV Resort is the RC race car track. While we think this is interesting considering the park is only open to adults over age 55, it’s a fun amenity. One RVer shared, “If you’re into RC racing, they have a really cool track that you can either compete with your own RC car or be a spectator.” Another guest wrote, “I can’t say enough about how much I enjoy this RV park. The staff is incredible. The community and activities are awesome. The RC club and race track is one of the best in the Valley.”
Exterior Well Maintained
Alamo Palms is a gated, secure RV park. Guests feel safe here. The landscape is beautiful, and the grounds are well taken care of. The staff seems to take pride in the overall appearance of the park, and it shows. One happy camper shared, “We have been at Alamo Palms for about 11 years. When you drive in, you feel like you are going to a resort! Our park is beautiful and well cared for. We have a wonderful management and office team.”

Great Staff
Finally, as you can see from the previous reviews, the staff at Alamo Palms RV Resort is fantastic. They’re hospitable and hard-working. A long-time visitor explained, “We have been winter Texans at this resort for 13 years. We love the park. The staff are more than helpful. The people are all friendly and fun.”
A resident at the resort wrote, “The staff is wonderful. We have a great manager, and the facilities are constantly being upgraded and improved. We have so many activities that you can’t possibly do all of them. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and we would love for YOU to be a part of our Alamo Palms family because that is what we are, a family.”

The Cons of Alamo Palms RV Resort
However, even with the positive reviews about the amenities, RC track, and staff, Alamo Palms RV Resort isn’t perfect. While we think the pros outweigh the cons for many RVers, it’s worth mentioning the small sites and repeating that the campground is only for travelers over 55.
Small Sites
We mentioned that Alamo Palms is part of the Trails Collection through Thousand Trails. Most Thousand Trails properties don’t provide spacious sites. You won’t find large, paved campsites where you can host a family gathering or a tailgate party with friends. The sites are tight, and Alamo Palms RV Resort is no exception.
Age-Qualified Resort
Finally, only guests aged 55 and older can enjoy this campground. The age qualification is a bummer for many families and younger RVers who want to stay in this part of Texas. It’s a popular snowbird destination because of the pleasant weather. But not everyone can take advantage of it.

Things To Do Around Alamo Palms RV Resort
If you’re looking to explore the area, there are plenty of things to do near Alamo Palms RV Resort. Bring your passport so you can take a day trip into Mexico and enjoy the shopping and dining there. Head out to South Padre Island and soak up the sun along the Gulf Coast beaches. Water ski, fish, surf, or do whatever other water recreation you enjoy.
