Yurts are one of the trendiest styles for upscale camping or “glamping.” Those looking for a more portable, affordable, comfortable, and charming alternative should check out a yurt tent.

If you’re wondering about the differences between glamping styles and what makes yurt tents stand out, you’re not alone. Read on to learn more about this useful tent growing in popularity. Let’s get started!

What Is a Yurt Tent?

wo A yurt tent is pretty simple. It combines certain aspects of a typical yurt and a traditional tent. It’s one step above a standard tent regarding space and style but below the average yurt since it offers less permanent shelter and protection from the elements.

Where and Why Are Yurt Tents Used?

Many folks think of high-end, luxury camping or “glamping” when a yurt or yurt tent comes to mind. But versatility and portability are two of the strong suits of yurt tents, so that you can use them almost anywhere for nearly any event!

This includes business or personal retreats, small cookouts or parties, or an excellent extra space in your backyard for everything from a kids’ play area to a home office. The options are nearly endless, with the only limits being your imagination and interests!

This is in contrast to standard yurts, which are far more challenging and time-consuming to take down, move, and reassemble.

Can You Live in a Yurt Tent?

While a yurt tent offers more comfort, space, and protection from the elements than a typical tent, they’re generally not full-time living spaces.

They provide less protection from the elements and invaders like bugs or animals than a standard yurt. They also have less stability than an authentic yurt, as a central pole and guy lines support the structure as opposed to the lattice “skeleton” of a yurt.

What Makes a Yurt Tent Different Than a Regular Tent?

Those considering an upgrade from a camping tent will enjoy several notable upgrades with a yurt tent.

The most obvious is their size. An average yurt tent is significantly larger than most personal tents, with enough space for a medium-sized group to stand or sit. This is ideal for campers who aren’t fans of crawling in and out of small, cramped sleeping spaces.

Many yurt tents also come with stove jacks, which allow stoves to vent smoke directly through the roof. This can be incredibly valuable as it will enable campers to cook inside.

They can also efficiently and safely heat their space in chilly weather. Generally speaking, this makes them 4-season capable, unlike many regular tents, which you can only comfortably use in spring, summer, and fall. The walls also typically roll up to allow better ventilation in warm conditions.

Finally, yurt tents have an undeniable style that distinguishes them from utilitarian nylon or polyester models. There’s no doubt they’ll get the campground or your neighbors talking, no matter where you set up.

How Long Do Yurt Tents Last?

Yurt tents are generally quite durable, with a long lifespan under everyday use and maintenance. Most yurt covers form the exterior and take the brunt of the weather.

They can usually last 5-10 years if you care for them well. Interior components like guy wires and a support pole can theoretically last indefinitely as long as they don’t get frayed or broken.

This is much longer than a regular tent, which can generally only stand up to 3-5 years of everyday use before a complete replacement is necessary.
