Thousand Trails Membership Options

This post may contain affiliate links.

If you are full time RVing it is almost financially irresponsible not to have a Thousand Trails membership.

The problem is that the membership levels are a little confusing.

When we first heard of it and started doing our own research we realized that there were many different options and then even more add-ons you could get bundled with your membership.

We had to read through multiple different blog posts and the fine print on the Thousand Trails website, countless e-mails with Campground Membership Outlet and calls to the Thousand Trails Member Services department to feel we could make an educated decision on which membership to buy.

Because of all that headache, we created the complete guide to Thousand Trails and the summaries below of each membership in the hope to break it down for future full-timers and save you the headache that we went through.

We also made the video below for a quick summary if you already know. a little bit about Thousand Trails memberships.

Some of these memberships you can buy directly through Thousand Trails but we highly recommend buying it second hand through Campground Membership Outlet at a much cheaper rate.

That is what we did and we saved over $5,000 on our membership by buying someone else’s membership.

The best way to get the current list of memberships for sale is to fill out the form below or call them at (800) 272-0401 and mention Getaway Couple sent you.

Resale Thousand Trails Membership Options

These memberships are best for those who are looking to get an upgraded Thousand Trails membership but also save money. We personally purchased a resale membership in 2017 and saved thousands.

We believe that a resale membership is the best option for most people.

The memberships below are in order of the highest-priced/most benefits packages to the lowest.

We’ve also bolded what makes these packages stand out from one another.

Elite Basic

This is the most common Thousand Trails membership option. It offers access to all 81 Thousand Trails parks, allows up to a 21-night stay (except high-use), and allows you to go park to park.

We have this membership option and love it. We choose it because of our plans to travel the East coast where we could take advantage of the extra parks in this membership.

  • Includes all 81 membership resorts – Thousand Trails, Naco, Leisure Time, Outdoor World & Mid Atlantic
  • Stay up to 21 nights and then go park to park with no time out of the system
  • Stay 365 days a year with no nightly fee

If you like to stay for a longer period of time in a campground, this is the option for you.

The “No High Use Restrictions” is ONLY available on this membership. This would allow you to stay put for the whole 21 days in busy campgrounds like Thousand Trails Orlando or Thousand Trails Palm Springs in the winter.

With the Trails Collection add-on which includes 100+ campgrounds, the additional 21 parks included with the Elite Basic membership may be worth passing on for the no high-use restrictions benefit.

Infographic explaining new Thousand Trails Membership upgrades that are available.

New Thousand Trails Membership Options

While purchasing a new membership is more expensive, they can offer some benefits that can only be received from newly upgraded membership.

These benefits vary from increased booking windows to longer stay limits. If you’re the kind of person who likes the best, check out the new membership options below.

We have listed them from the cheapest with the least benefits to the most expensive with the most benefits.

The Zone Pass / Camping Pass

The Camping Pass (formerly Zone Pass) is the cheapest option available to get access to Thousand Trails Parks.

It is also the base membership that all new upgrades are based on.

There is no upfront cost to purchase the membership, only the annual dues.

The two big caveats to this membership are that it only allows you access to the parks in your “camping zone” and you are not able to go from park to park if you stay longer than 4 days in a campground.

We had this membership when we first started RVing and it was great to check out the Thousand Trails RV Park quality and learn how the system worked.

If you want to get the Zone Pass, check out our article on how to save $100 or reach out to the membership specialists Brady and Jim Reneau at brandy_reneau@equitylifestyle.com or (770) 622-4188

  • 81 campgrounds are divided among 5 camping zones: Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Northeast and Southeast
    • Northeast – 14 Campground
    • Southeast – 23 Campgrounds
    • Northwest – 18 Campgrounds
    • Southwest – 18 Campgrounds
    • Midwest – 8 Campgrounds
  • Annual dues to Thousand Trails average $565 for a single-zone
  • Add additional zones for an average $49 each
  • Promotions may add additional zones for free
  • Stay up to 14 nights and then stay out of the system for 7 days
  • “High Use Restrictions” – can only stay 14 nights if the park has restrictions in effect (popular sites at popular times EX: Florida / California in the winter)

Elite Basic

This is the most common Thousand Trails membership option. It offers access to all 81 Thousand Trails parks, allows up to a 21-night stay (except high-use), and allows you to go park to park. When you purchase this membership new, you are able to freeze your dues at 62.

We have this membership option (but purchased used) and love it.

  • Can make a reservation up to 120 days in advance / 90 to OW & MA
  • “High Use Restrictions” – can only stay 14 nights if the park has restrictions in effect (popular sites at popular times, example: Florida/California in the winter)

  • 50% off cabin rentals when booked for 5 nights or more

With the larger booking window, you can take advantage of early access to the book even the busiest campgrounds.

  1. hello, did watch you on youtube which brought me to your blog. question when you buy a membership is it a 5yr or more, as this has never been made clear to me. I am hoping to go full time here soon so I am doing my homework. love your video. thanks and have a great day

    1. Thanks Kimberly, It depends on the contract but most resale options have only a 1-year requirement. It then goes year to year. You can either sell your membership to someone else or notify Thousand Trails you want to cancel.

  2. What I don’t understand is what the difference is between an RV resort and a campground? Does the Platinum and Full Elite not include whatever a campground is? Thanks

    1. The difference between a campground versus resort only appears to differentiate between amenities available at the campground. Resorts offer more amenities. The different memberships don’t differentiate between them based on names.

  3. how many reservations are allowed in the TT system at one anytime? for example with TRA only can have 3 reservations at the time. Once one is used then another one can be made, how do reservations work with TT.

  4. Hi, the link to the breakout resorts doesn’t work. Do you happen to have a more current link to that information? Thanks!

  5. Hi, great content! I’m curious, in one of your videos you mentioned you’d purchase the VIP membership with the trails collection if that option were available when you purchased… does adding the VIP membership allow you to stay in the trails collection resorts any longer then14 days? Is there any membership that would allow you stay in the Trails collection resorts for more than 14 days at a time?

    1. No, the trails collection has a different set of rules than your membership. We recommend the VIP and Trails Collection because it gives you a good amount of parks for a lower cost. The Elite was great but only added an additional 20ish parks for roughly $1000. It was worth it before the Trails Collection. I would save that $1000 and use it for 5 years of Trails Collection membership which gives you 120ish parks.

  6. We purchased the Thousand Trails Elite, and in this post you mention “RPI Basic/RPI Preferred/RPI Preferred Gold reciprocal agreement for annual RPI dues”. How does this work? I can’t find any info on it anywhere, and the person I talked to at TT didn’t know anything about it.

  7. Thousand Trails is doing a Black Friday sale, $150 off their usual annual membership price. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it. We’re currently camping about 25 nights/year (late spring-early fall) with a 30 amp travel trailer. The cost of camping is just under $1,000, which allows us to choose campgrounds with kid-friendly amenities (mostly KoAs and resorts with water attractions).

Is it feasible to only stay at the Thousand Trail resorts in a particular zone (let’s say NE, although adding a second zone for $49 seems quite cheap) without paying any extra fees? We probably won’t be staying at the same resort for more than a week, and likely won’t be staying at the same resort twice in a season. Thanks!

    1. Yes it is completely possible to stay in a single zone without paying any additional fees. You could go to the same campground every weekend and it would still be covered under the annual fee. I do not think I recommend it to someone like you that only stays 25 nights/year and are looking for kid activities.

  8. Where is your response to the Elite membership differences? It does seem odd that the Elite allows less than the others in the restricted days stay allowed.

    1. Elite is the newest membership so it offers only the benefits that they want to currently offer. They only allow stays during restricted times due to wording of the contracts when they were selling the VIP memberships.

  9. Can payments for the platinum, elite or any other of the memberships be strecthed out over a period of time?

    1. If you purchase resale then no. They do accept credit card though and the finance charges will most likely be less than buying new.

  10. I saw your yes and no comment on one time and yearly dues. So is it safe to say that what you meant was you pay the one time 4000 ish amount for the elite membership which stays with you for life then you just pay the 700 ish yearly dues to thousand trails?

  11. Would a TT membership work for someone wanting to stay in the same general geographic area full time (in this case within 1 hr of Sacramento)? Can you flip back & forth between 2-3 parks after each 21 day stay limit?

    1. You absolutely can if there are 2-3 parks in the area. I also know some people that stay 21 days at a park, then pay for 1 week at that same park, then stay another 21 days, pay for 1 week, etc. Not sure if that is “allowed” but I know it has been done before.

  12. Jason-What would you recommend for full time RV’r that travels the entire USA and does a mix of boondocking and military campgrounds but wants the options of staying 1-3 weeks say 6-10 times a year. What I am concerned about it purchasing a membership then paying the annual fees then when I want to use the membership no space available or only limited to certain regions. Since I am not sure what membership would be right for us it makes it hard to run the numbers of purchasing a membership vs the cost of paying private RV.

    1. Hey Brian, that is a hard one. I would say pass on the membership. It would be cheaper to use Thousand Trails in the long run but with only 6 – 30 weeks of usage and most likely during “High Use” times you will be happier paying the extra every year for the freedom of private campgrounds. If you want to use it more than 30 though then you can get into some significant cost savings. You will definitely save money over the long run if you do purchase a membership though.

  13. Do you have to buy the Zone Passes if you are interested in buying the Platnium membership. Or does the Platnium membership include certain areas of the country.

    1. The Platinum membership is only available as a resale and does not require a zone pass. The campgrounds that you would be able to visit would depend on the specific contract but they would not be separated by ‘regions’ like the current zone passes.

  14. What is the benefit of buying a first owner, first generation to a VIP platinum plus with Gold card membership?
They also said they bought 2 cards for their children to use it, I thought it came with cards for 8 people to use for the year.

  15. I am curious to know what the advantage is to buying an elite, platinum, etc., vs just going with a zone pass? Does a simple zone pass make it harder to make reservations at parks?

  16. I watched your video on the different memberships for Thousand Trails and you recommended the VIP membership, if you can find one. Can the trails collection be added to this membership if I can find one to purchase, or am I suck with the membership the way it was originally purchased.

    1. The trails collection is a separate program and can be added to ANY thousand trails membership including the zone pass!

  17. Resales clearly state on the paperwork that your only obligation is to pay 1 years dues. After one year you can cancel with no penalties or problems.

  18. I’m confused about the resale. Exactly what does that mean. My understanding was that TT is an annual membership, so what is being resold?

    1. The annual membership contract is being sold. TT has been around so they have offered different perks and benefits through the years that are not offered anymore. Each contract is a little different so that’s what you are purchasing. Or someone has paid for one of the newer contracts but doesn’t need it anymore so they are trying to recoup some of their original cost while you save on purchasing new.

  19. Hi, we are on the verge of buying Elite Basic with thousand Trails but we had 2 questions and I wondered if you knew the answers. 1. If we choose to pay the monthly payment will we still have to pay the annual dues required by Ellite Basic (or is it included) or does that start after you have paid off your membership? #2 After we have paid it off (6995.00)or even before we have paid it off can we cancel the Elite Basic? If I chose not to sell it. If I just don’t want to pass it on or sell it. Will I be stuck with it for the rest of my life or can I cancel that Annual fee and membership all together? Or am I stuck for the rest of my life making that annual fee?

    1. Not sure about the monthly payment including the annual dues but member services will be able to answer that really quickly. If you choose not to sell it and it’s paid off, then you cancel it and no longer pay the annual fee and you’re done. It’s not like a timeshare where you need to worry about selling it to get rid of it.

  20. I’m wondering about the process of purchasing a membership from another member. How long does the transfer process take??

    1. Depends on the number of memberships the transfer team is currently working on at Thousand Trails. It can take between a few days and a few weeks.

  21. Thanks so much for this post! It really helps ease my mind knowing there are options without the “wait” times in between!

    1. You should be able to log into the Thousand Trails website and they should be listed under “My Campgrounds” on the homepage.

  22. Hi Jason, just a couple of questions. I was wondering what :RPI” stands for and “dues frozen” under the Ultimate Odyssey Collection –
    (2) Free years RPI Resort Connections + (6) $500 vacation credits
    Dues Frozen at Age 62

Thanks so much for your information! We are just going fulltime and are trying to decide which membership would be best for travelling up to northwest in the summer and southwest in the winter!
    Colleen and Mike

    1. Dues Frozen at 62 means that they will not annually increase your dues after age 62. RPI is another program that gets you cheap stays at other “membership only” campgrounds. They are smaller memberships with 1 – 20ish campgrounds that are membership-only but RPI allows you access to them.

  23. A friend recently purchased a new TT membership and he stated that he was told that buying second-hand would not get the same benefits or “hospitality” as a new membership. Any thoughts?

    1. That was probably some Thousand Trails salesperson who makes commission on new memberships. There is no difference if you buy new or resale. The difference in benefits are listed above but a resale Elite basic is the same as a new Elite basic.

  24. What is the “Masters” membership that I see listed on Ebay and how does it compare?

jAnd is “Elite Connections” membership above what I thought was the “Getaway” membership that gives you use of the “Getaway” cabins?

    1. Never heard of a “Masters” membership but they have had 50 years of memberships so could be a less well known one. Many resale Elite memberships allow use of the Getaway Cabin rentals too. Check with Kim about that benefit.

  25. We are newly retired & full timing using up our TT membership that came with our trailer purchase. We are debating cost benefit of buying a resale with waiting 4weeks to book vs. buying new with having longer booking date of 180 days & booking immediately. We feel we need to get winter snowbird sites booked asap.

    1. When we purchased our resale, Campground Membership Outlet and Thousand Trails member services helped us book campgrounds under our new membership during the 4 week transfer process. We had to call member services but they saw our processing membership transfer and booked the campgrounds under that before we had all of our paperwork. The 180 days is nice but we have found it unnecessary (except for 2 or 3 VERY popular resorts).

  26. Pingback: 7 Luxury Thousand Trails Campgrounds | 2020 Guide - Drivin' & Vibin'
  27. We have a friend with a membership he wants to sell. He says the fees are frozen/suspended so I am not sure what that means. Will we have to pay back dues if we purchase the contract? What else should we be looking for?
Thanks, stumbled upon your sight so I will be following you now.

  28. Hi Jason,

Just want to confirm my understanding on this topic, if I purchase an used membership, pay 1 year maintenance fee, then in year 2 I decide to “cancel”. Then, it means I will lose the membership forever, correct (i.e. can’t re-instate the membership again)?

Conversely, if I purchase a new membership (1 time fee will be higher and must commit to 5 years), then I have the option to “freeze” my annual maintenance fee? Thanks.

    Thong

  29. For those of you who have a TT package. When you book whether it’s 180,120,90,or 69 days in advance is it from the dare you want to start or end? Example if I want to book 12-11 for 3 days and I have a 60 day pre book …. can I book 10-11 or would I have to wait til 10-14 ?

  30. The only membership I’m aware of that holds no limit on the amount of reservations you can make back to back is the VIP/Elite which is what makes this particular brand of membership within TT so unique and valuable. Even Odyssey members who paid a WHOLE bunch of money can’t do this. You can vette this out for yourself but the last time I checked this with Kim at Campground Memberships (which buy the way I would HIGHLY recommend) this was the case. Good luck in your travels and keep the rubber side down.

  31. We currently have a TT Camping pass with Trails Collection (Encore) and are thinking about upgrading and will be contacting Kim (CMO) soon. I know purchasing a resale membership will not include the Encore parks (or transfer my current annual contract). Do you know if I can continue using Encore from my Camping Pass until it expires in Sept ‘20 even after I purchase a TT membership?

    1. I would give them a call and discuss with member services but I do not think so. Unfortunately, they are pretty strict with TC.

  32. I was told that all resale losses the benefit of freezing the annual dues at 62. Is that true or was an upgrade specialist being commition driven

  33. I have an Ultimate Odyssey — and I’ve always been able to make reservations back-to-back without issue. I have a 180 day reservation window… and it’s pretty much booked all the way up with back-to-backs.

  34. Hi Jason,
Thank you for the very informative page. I only have one question: why you need to buy any membership, if you can simply just pay the annual fee for a zone, and add other zones if needed ?

    1. You can absolutely use the system that way. The other memberships have benefits like the ability to go park-to-park with no time out of the system and longer reservation windows among other things. If you don’t need those then you don’t need the more expensive memberships.

  35. This is for the person asking about whether or not you keep Trails Collection that is already purchased if you upgrade. We just dealt with this question and were told that everything is separate. The Memberships (Elite , etc) are separate from the yearly pass dues. So when you buy the membership you get all the perks which are the zones, longer stays, park to park and larger booking windows…but your original Camping Pass situation remains the same. So you would still have the Trails Collection until your annual dues camp up, to renew or not as you wish. That is what I was told by TT.

  36. So none of these various lifetime membership levels will give you any kind of leg up getting reservations in the trails collection/encore parks. No additional advance book windows, no extended stays, no park to park?
