What Is a Class A Motorhome?

A class A motorhome is a drivable RV on a heavy-duty chassis. The frame is on a commercial bus chassis or commercial truck chassis.

You can distinguish a class A with their big, flat front window. They’re also the largest RV on the market. You can find them from 25’ long to around 45’ long.

What Are the Differences in Motorhome Classes?

There are three classes of motorhomes – class A, B, and C. Class A motorhomes are the most robust on a heavy-duty frame. The downside of class A is that they get the worst gas mileage, typically from 6-10 mpg. While a diesel version will bring in better fuel efficiency than a gas version, these motorhomes will cost you more to travel with than a smaller class.

Class B motorhomes are the smallest in class. Like a class C, they’re on a van chassis, but the motorhome is smaller. Sometimes class Bs are referred to as camper vans. You can find them between 18’ to 25’ long. Class B motorhomes have the best fuel economy, ranging from 8-15 mpg. And they are available in gas or diesel models.

Class C motorhomes fall within the middle of class As and Bs in terms of size. You can find them between 20’ to just under 40’ long. They sit on a van chassis, with the coach’s house built on the back frame. Class C motorhomes are available in gas and diesel. Gas mileage in class C will run from 8-12 mpg.

For example, Thor manufacturers the Outlaw, which is a class A and class C motorhome, and Newmar’s Canyon Star 3927 is the only diesel class A toy hauler on the market.

What Are the Benefits of Class A Motorhomes?

There are many benefits to a class A motorhome. They are spacious with many storage options, depending on the model. The cargo-carrying capacities are typically very high compared to any other RV.

They also tend to have more luxurious features and amenities. In addition, class A offers a smooth ride due to its wheelbase and bus chassis versus class C, which sits on a van chassis.

What Are the Disadvantages of Class A Motorhomes?

The main disadvantage of class A motorhomes is the gas mileage. They’re big rigs that aren’t as fuel-efficient as a class B motorhome.

Another disadvantage is the maneuverability, especially the bigger models. It can also be challenging to find campgrounds that fit an RV over 35’ long.

Compare Class A Motorhome Against Class C Motorhome

You get more bang for your buck with a class A motorhome. They typically have more living space and more storage room.

Class A RVs can also be more accessible to drive than class Cs due to their bus-like turn radius. We recommend driving both a class A and class C motorhome to see which you’re more comfortable with on the road.

Is a Class A Motorhome Worth it?

A class A motorhome is worth it if you’ll be using it frequently. It can be hard on a driveable RV to sit for long periods. The engines need to be run and maintained. That’s why class A RVs can be excellent options for full-time RVers or someone who camps multiple times a year.
